This school year has been so much fun! I really enjoyed all the projects we've done in language with Mrs. Browning. When we would first start all the projects I was really worried that I wouldn't finish in time or that I wouldn't have anything to write about. That thought was so false because when we would do the writing projects I would normally have too many pages or too many words! Language has by far been my favorite class this year! my favorite projects we've done where the independent reading project, 20 percent time, This I believe, The outsiders, and the Eddie project. Mostly anything we do in this class is fun. Mrs. Browning is such a great teacher because she makes learning way better. I've learned so much this year and I even learned that I really enjoy reading. The This I believe project taught me what I need to know to be a good person.

I've decided to focus mainly on the alphabet and how to spell out words quickly. Before the end of the year I want to be able to use sign language quickly and be able to know the letters without even thinking about it. I also want to learn and memorize signs. For my tri board project I plan on taking pictures of my hands doing certain signs. I've truly enjoyed this project because it taught me that sign language really isn't that hard.

A few days ago Mrs.Browning assigned us a reading project. We had to choose a chapter book to read in 10 days. After we read the book we are supposed to do one of her selected assignments about the book. My book is called Leaving and Ive read a lot of it, but Im still pretty far away from the ending. so far the book has been really good and I haven't been able to put it down. Today instead of working on my sign language im going to read the book.

Today I watched the video again. For some reason I always thought that words that related to boys came out of your chin and girl words came out of your forehead, but I just realized that its opposite. I also started thinking about my finishing product of this project. Mrs. Browning said that we are going to present them in the library on a 3 sided poster board. For mine I think I'm going to take pictures of my hands of me doing some of the signs and I'll write their meanings around them. These words are kind of hard to learn, but having a video to watch and friends to go over the words with makes it a lot easier.

Wednesday, Novmeber 18

Today I looked over the alphabet again and made sure I remember all the letters correctly. Then I tried spelling out a few basic words. I spent most of my time working on the 20% Time sheet questions.

Wednesday, December 10

This week during my 20% Time I've been watching a video about symbols for words. In this video they show you how to say basic words. The main topics they show you about are family, places, time, temperature, food, clothes, health, feelings, requests, amounts, colors, money, and animals. Learning these symbols will help you say things quicker. It would take forever to spell out every word, so I hope to learn these symbols to say things faster in sign language.

Last week we teleconferenced with the kids at MMS. I really liked talking to them and just hearing their opinions about stereotyping too. Its crazy to me how different but alike all of us are. Discussing stereotypes helped me realize a bunch of things that I didn't even notice before. From this conference I realized how much people really do stereotype each other. I never really noticed it before. I also realized that stereotypes aren't always a bad thing. Before this unit I just thought that stereotypes were a negative category somebody put someone else in. After talking with everyone about it I understand now that it can be a good thing that its just how you take it. If someone called a person a nerd, depending on how the person thinks about it, it could be a good thing because they're calling you smart. Calling someone a jock could also be a good thing because they're saying that you're good at sports. People could also take them negatively too by thinking that nerds are weird and social awkward and that jocks aren't smart and stuck up. Mainly on stereotypes I learned that a lot of the problem can be solved by how you think about it. Personally I think that if you just think positively about it and just let the people rant and don't let it bother you then they might just leave you alone. If they keep doing it after you've let it go and not get so worked up about it and asked  them to stop, then tell someone. If you let some random person make you so mad by saying something about you then you're letting them win by getting so worked up about it. If you always stay confident in who you are and don't worry about what other people think about you and find your worth in the Lord then you will always be satisfied.

Friday, January 16

At first when I came in, I started watching the video ago. I watched it for a few minutes and got through the first three categories. Then I found this new thing that helps you learn words spelled out. You can choose how many letters the word has and how fast they spell it. Then you guess the word that they are spelling. http://asl.ms/ this is the link to the website. This "game" helped me realize that I need to go over the alphabet a few more times.

Since I was getting most of the words wrong, I pulled the alphabet pictures up again and went over them a few more times. Then I went back to the game and I got more of the correct so I went up in the number of letters each word has. Its pretty hard but im starting to get the hang of it.

Friday, January 9

Since we have been out for Christmas break and I haven't reviewed sign language in a few weeks, I decided to go back over the simple things like the alphabet and some of the symbols in the video. Before I went over these things I could barely remember any of the letters or symbols. Hopefully after going over them a few more times I will be able to remember them no matter how long I don't go over them. The video I've been watching is http://lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/concepts.htm. They show you how to say a bunch of words without having to spell them out with each letter in the alphabet.
By going over all these words I hope to have them completely memorized. You can use sign language for many things. Most people believe that they don't need to know sign language because none of their friends or family members can't hear, but what they don't realize is that maybe they'll run into a deaf person one day. Then what are they going to do?

Project Proposal

          20% Time Project Proposal

Name: Haleigh Jinright

Project Title:  Sign Language

Project Start Date: Friday, November 7, 2014

Project Completion Date: May 2014

Mentor’s Name: Mrs.Browning, Emma Grant, Rebecca Bower, and my mom

Brief Description: This year during 20% Time in class I’m spending my time learning sign language. I feel like sign language can be very useful because if you’re trying to talk to someone who can’t hear you have to use something else for them to understand. Most people that are deaf know sign language. I feel like everyone should learn how to use sign language. Even if you don’t see that many people that can’t hear, you might end up running into someone like that one day and if you don’t know sign language then you won’t be able to communicate with them.

Overview of Project Proposal

1) Project Objective: To learn how to use sign language for a complete sentence and to know how to communicate with it.

2) Project Rationale:

3) Project Steps: First I learned how to spell my name. Second I plan on learning regular everyday words. Then I want to learn symbols.

4) Timeline of Activities: First I want to learn my name or my friend’s names. Second I want to learn simple but everyday words. Third, I’m going learn the symbols for words. At the end of my project I want to be able to use sign language like I use English.

5) Available Human and Material Resources: This can help me speak to people that can’t hear me.

6) Possible Road Blocks: One Roadblock that I might have is that I might forget how to spell things. Another Roadblock would be that I would get bored doing this or I might learn most of the things and not know what to do next.

7) Research Questions:

·         How many symbols are there for sign language?

·         How do people learn sign language if they can’t hear?

·         How do people that are deaf remember sign language?

·         Who created sign language?
